Applying with the EPC (European Professional Card)

HCPC accepts applications from professionals who have the European Professional Card (EPC).

What the EPC is

The EPC isn’t a physical card. It’s electronic evidence of the holder’s professional rights, which have been obtained in their home state and replaces the need for making a paper application for registration.

Within the EU member states, regulators and organisations accept that individuals holding the EPC are qualified to practice to a certain standard (even though the name of their qualification may differ between countries).

How to apply for registration with the EPC

EPC holders from states outside the EU will need to make an international application.

EPC applications

  • The following professions are eligible to apply for the EPC:

    • Physiotherapists

  • Using the EPC for the purpose of establishment is a two-stage process: if you wish to become established in your profession in the UK, and wish to use the EPC mechanism rather than making a paper application, you need to contact the competent authority in the country of your professional establishment (your ‘home State’). You will need to use the Your Europe website to start your EPC application with them.

    The EPC for the purpose of establishment is initiated by your home State, and then transferred to HCPC electronically. We will inform you of the outcome of the recognition procedure within two months of receiving your file.

    Please note, you must provide supporting documents (with certified translations into English where necessary) when submitting your application through the EPC mechanism; as you would with a paper application.

    Please note that the paper application form under the European Mutual Recognition (EMR) route is still available to physiotherapists with relevant rights.

  • There is a cost associated with processing your EPC application – a scrutiny fee of £220. Once we accept your file for processing we will contact you via e-mail and request this payment. Scrutiny payment is made online, by following a link and instructions sent in our e-mail.

    Following acceptance for admission to the Register, a registration fee of £90 per year is payable. The amount covers a profession’s two year registration cycle with the HCPC.

  • There are several possible outcomes to the application assessment process:

    • Recognition of professional qualifications - recommendation to accept for admission to the Register;
    • Requirement to complete a compensation measure – we may ask you to undertake an adaptation period (commonly referred to as period of adaptation or ‘POA’) in order to reach the standard required to be registered with us. As an alternative, you may request an Aptitude Test in place of the adaptation period. Two opportunities will be provided to take the test should the applicant decide to pursue this option.

    The assessment process leads to decision on the recognition of your professional qualifications. In order to become registered, other checks, such as character and verification checks, must also be completed successfully.

  • To avoid your application being delayed, please make sure you read about our requirements in full on the Your Europe website.

    As a minimum you must provide:

    • evidence of your professional qualifications;
    • information about the length and content of your training;
    • a certificate of good standing;
    • evidence of your professional experience if your profession in unregulated in your home State; and
    • Proof of your nationality / identity.

    We also encourage you to provide evidence of any other training or professional experience relevant to practising your profession.
